My husband had been struggling in bed but was afraid to do anything about it so as not to upset me. Very prompt delivery! My girlfriend was really surprised to see how long I was able to last in bed and needles to say we had a great weekend trip away from the big city. My doctor recommended the usual prescription pills for my condition but he failed to mention how expensive these were. Thank you! Gabapentin capsule

What is it used for?

GABAPENTIN is effective in helping to control partial seizures (convulsions) for adults with epilepsy. Gabapentin is also used to help relieving certain types of nerve pain, and may be prescribed for the other nervous system disorders.

What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • depression
  • kidney disease
  • suicidal thoughts, plans, or attempt; a previous suicide attempt by you or a family member
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to gabapentin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How is this medicine should be taken?

Gabapentin should be taken orally by swallowing the whole capsules with a drink of water. If gabapentin upsets your stomach, take it with food or milk. Your doses should be taken at the regular intervals. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed.

Inquire with your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.

What to do if I missed a dose?

If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?

  • antacids
  • hydrocodone
  • morphine
  • naproxen
  • sevelamer

Provide your physician with a list of all the medicine, including herbs and non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements that you are using. Do let them know if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use any of the illegal drugs or drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine, causing undesired consequenses. Please always consult your health care professional prior to stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking this medicine?

Pay regular visits to your prescriber or health care professional for check-ups on your progress. You may want to keep a personal record at home of how you feel and how your condition is responding to the gabapentin treatment. You may want to share this information with your prescriber or health care professional during each visit.

Wear a Medic Alert bracelet or necklace if you are taking gabapentin for seizures. Carry an identification card with information about your condition, medications, and prescriber or health care professional on you. You should contact your prescriber or health care professional if your seizures get worse or if you have any new types of seizures. Do not stop taking gabapentin or any of your seizure medicines unless instructed by your prescriber or health care professional. Stopping to take your medicine suddenly can increase seizures or their severity.

You may get drowsy, dizzy, or have blurred vision. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how gabapentin affects you. To reduce dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness. Refrain from using alcohol at all costs.

The use of this medicine may increase the chance of suicidal thoughts or actions. Pay special attention to how you are responding while on this medicine. Any worsening of mood, or thoughts of suicide or dying should be reported to your health care professional right away.

If you are going to have a surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking gabapentin.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • difficulty breathing or tightening of the throat
  • swelling of lips or tongue
  • rash
  • worsening of mood, thoughts or actions of suicide or dying
  • fever
  • hyperactivity
  • hostile or aggressive behavior
  • mood changes or changes in behavior
  • difficulty concentrating

The side effets listed below usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):

  • constipation
  • difficulty walking or controlling muscle movements
  • dizziness, drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • back pain, joint aches and pains
  • indigestion, gas or heartburn
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • pain, burning or tingling in the hands or feet
  • restlessness
  • sexual difficulty (impotence)
  • skin itching
  • slurred speech
  • sore gums
  • tremor
  • weight gain

Where should I store it?

Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach, in a container that they cannot open.

This medicine should be stored at the room temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
